It's a dream come true for all of Michigan and Ohio, the state football fans. Could it be possible that the "Great Game", to be played twice in one season? According to the new divisions in the Big Ten Conference, which just might happen.
From the beginning of 2011 – 2012 academic year Big Ten Conference will be divided into two divisions. Although the names of these two conferences are to be determined, the teams have been assigned. The biggest news to come from this division of the conference is that Michigan and Ohio State have separated.
The division of the first conference includes the University of Michigan, University of Nebraska, the University of Iowa, Michigan State University, Northwestern University, and University of Minnesota.
The second division includes University Ohio State, the University of Illinois, Pennsylvania State University, the University of Wisconsin, Purdue University and Indiana University.
Jim Delaney Big Ten commissioner, said there were two objectives to be achieved by dividing the Big Ten Conference. The first goal was to create divisions in football with balance competitive, and the second priority was to keep the rivalry games between the divisions for each team. Delaney said: "We feel like we could make a competition equitable and tradition with this movement. "
Speaking of tradition, the rivalry between Michigan and Ohio State goes back to 1897 with 106 games played. The final game of the season has often determined the Big Ten title. If everyone plays their cards, there can be games back to back with a rematch for the championship.
While the most popular Big Ten Conference rivalry Michigan and Ohio State, some of the other traditional rivalries will remain so. For example, Iowa and Minnesota continue to fight for the rights to the statue of the "bronze pig." While Minnesota and Michigan continue to play with the "Little Brown Jug."
According to the director of Big Ten Network, Ohio State athletics, Gene Smith said: "I think it's a great opportunity for both programs to win divisions and be in the championship game. Michigan Athletic Director, Dave Brandon, told the Associated Press: "I am very happy that we came out of this with protected rivalries will be made permanent with Ohio State. Let's play the last game of the regular season, following a tradition that has endured for decades. And if both win right, we can play the Buckeyes again in the Big ten Championship Game. "
