As my wife and I learned first hand the world of Equestrian College recruiting can be confusing and a little intimidating. I will try to give some meaning to the processes in the space allowed. There are many college different organizations that are straddling the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association), the IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Show Association), IDA (Intercollegiate Association Dressage), the ANRC (American National Riding Commission), and the NIRA (National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association). First we will cover a little about the NCAA. The NCAA only allows women to be recruited cyclists and this is a result of Title 9 which covers gender equality. Personally, I think this is unfair, and equestrian is one of the very few sports where men and women compete against each other in the Olympics. The guidelines are very stringent recruitment and must be followed to the letter. The NCAA allows 15 scholarships each university and schools can do whatever they want. Some give partial scholarships to horse / academics so they can recruit more pilots. Passengers must register with the NCAA clearinghouse before they are eligible to be recruited. A new rule went into affect this past year also dictates that the SAT or ACT results should be sent directly to the NCAA Clearinghouse by the testing agency. No exceptions. The pilots also must maintain good financial history of any prize money or expenses of any jurisdiction to another can make money as it deems eligible for the NCAA.
